Istanbul is host to the international and intercontinental marathon better know as the Eurasia Marathon. It is the only marathon of its kind as it sees the tens of thousands participants cross between two continents, Europe and Asia. The event has taken place in Istanbul every year on a Sunday in October since 1979 and continues to attract runners to its scenic route.
The race passes many historical sights including the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The course is mostly flat and traffic free and finishing at the European end in the Inonu Stadium. The events popularity is down to Istanbul’s athlete’s great expectations, the idea behind the event was to bring a unique marathon to a unique city. Described as a friendly race by its participants, the international runners are well supported by the huge and enthusiastic crowd.
The event is organized by the metropolitan municipality in Istanbul. The rules state that the participants must be 18 years of age or older on race day and the race is split into three categories for both men and women. The thousands who take part are provided with plenty of water and refreshments, the event is highly organized from aid stations policing. Prize money is also given to the first 25 males and the best 15 females are also awarded.
